Ransomware attacks of the type deployed by Black Basta consist of a computer virus that forcibly encrypts, or scrambles, data held on computers and servers. The company did not immediately respond when asked if the £20m sum included payment of a ransom to the Black Basta gang.Įarlier this month the data disappeared, which cyber experts said was a possible indicator of a ransom being paid. “Capita has taken extensive steps to recover and secure the customer, supplier and colleague data contained within the impacted server estate, and to remediate any issues arising from the incident.”Įxpected costs include the payment of “specialist professional fees, recovery and remediation costs and investment to reinforce Capita’s cyber security environment”. Previously it said up to 4pc of its servers were affected by the cyber attack. “Capita understands now, based on its own forensic work and that of its third-party providers, that some data was exfiltrated from less than 0.1pc of its server estate,” the company said on Wednesday morning. It also works on nuclear projects and handles IT for councils and the NHS.
The outsourcer also faces questions from the BBC about whether millions of households’ data was placed at risk, as the company holds a £456m contract to collect television licence payments. The admission comes after warnings from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) that pension funds who use Capita’s administrative software should check whether their members’ data had been stolen. In a statement on Wednesday, Capita said the aftermath of the “cyber incident” would cost it between £15m and £20m to clean up.
